Tata Motors roll out 4 lakh Tiago hatchback from Gujarat Plant

Tata Motors achieved a milestone recently by rolling out the 4,00,000th unit of its most affordable offering in India, the Tiago hatchback. The 4,00,000th unit of the Tata Tiago was manufactured in Tata Motors’ production capacity in Sanand, Gujarat, which is serving as the production hub for Tiago and Tigor since their launch in India. To commemorate this feat with its employees and customers, Tata Motors has launched a campaign named #Tiago4ever across the country.

Commenting on this achievement, Rajan Amba, Vice President, Sales, marketing and customer care at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, said that Tiago is the quickest car in the history of Tata Motors to achieve this production milestone of 4 lakh units.

He said that Tiago is one of the first products from Tata Motors’ turnaround 2.0 strategy for India, with which it has climbed the new ladders of success in the past 3-4 years. Amba also added that Tiago is gradually becoming a preferred choice among first-time car buyers, with around 60 per cent of the buyers of Tiago being the first-time car buyers.

Tata Tiago

Tata Motors launched the Tiago for the first time in 2016, as a spiritual successor to its highly popular Indica. Unlike the bare-bones Indica, the Tata Tiago impressed all types of car buyers with its youthful design, contemporary features and comparatively refined engines.

The Tiago was launched with two engine options – a 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox was offered as standard for both powertrain options, while the petrol engine was also made available with a 5-speed AMT in later stages.

After a couple of years, Tata Motors added two new versions of the Tiago, the Tiago JTP and Tiago NRG. The Tiago JTP came with a more powerful 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and suspension and visual tweaks to make it feel sportier than the regular version. On the other hand, the Tiago NRG came with additional rugged-looking visual tweaks and raised ground clearance to make it look like a heightened crossover. Both these versions were pulled off from the market before the BS6 emission norms kicked in.

The Tata Tiago received its first major facelift at the beginning of 2020, which saw the departure of the diesel engine. With this update, the Tiago became a petrol-only hatchback, offered with both 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options. The sales of Tata Tiago catapulted when the hatchback scored an impressive 4-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The Tiago NRG made a comeback in the facelifted form in the middle of 2021, while Tata Motors also added factory-fitted CNG-powered variants to the lineup.
