Toyota & Maruti mid-size to get mild & strong hybrid system

We all know that both Toyota and Maruti are jointly working on two mid size SUVs that would rival with the likes of Hyundai Creta in the market. The manufacturer has now confirmed that upcoming mid-size SUVs from both Maruti and Toyota will have a mild and strong hybrid engine. The mild hybrid system in the car will be supplied from Maruti and the strong hybrid system from Toyota. Both Maruti and Toyota will be offering the mild-hybrid system in the lower variant of the SUV while the higher variants will get the strong hybrid system.

Toyota will be unveiling their upcoming mid-size SUV on July 1, 2022. It was recently spotted without any camouflage during a TVC shoot. According to various media, the upcoming SUV from Toyota is likely to be called as Urban Cruise Hyryder. Maruti Suzuki’s version of the Hyryder is expected to be unveiled later in July itself. Along with the Hyundai Creta, the upcoming SUV will also compete with cars like Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.  With the launch of these two models, the mid-size SUV segment is likely to become a lot more competitive.

The SUVs will be manufactured by Toyota at their plant number 2 in Bidadi, Karnataka. Toyota will be manufacturing the SUVs for Maruti as well. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is expected to go on sale by late August, followed by Maruti’s counterpart. Both the SUVs have been spotted testing on our roads several times and based on these spy pictures, several render images of both the SUVs are also available online. Both Toyota Hyryder and Maruti’s SUV are expected to have a different exterior design. Both these SUVs will be sold in India and will also be exported to international markets like Africa. Toyota and Maruti Suzuki alliance was formed in 2017 and taking benefit from the partnership, Toyota has been selling rebadged versions of Baleno and Brezza in India and abroad.

Coming to the engine. The mild and strong hybrid system will be available with a 1.5 litre K15C petrol engine. This engine is developed by Maruti Suzuki and both the SUVs will be using it. The engine is expected to come with a manual and 6-speed automatic transmission option. Both these SUVs will be 5-seater models and they would share a lot of features – both convenience and safety features. Both the SUVs are expected to come with features like ventilated seats, multi-function steering wheel, automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment system, ABS, Airbags and other safety features.

Both the SUVs are expected to be based on Toyota’s DNGA platform. There are media reports that suggest that the SUVs are based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform. We would get a clear picture on the same when the car gets unveiled globally next month. The Suzuki C-platform is already used in cars like Brezza, S-Cross and the Vitara Brezza which is available internationally. The upcoming mid-size SUV from Maruti is expected to replace the Vitara Brezza from international market. There is a possibility that Maruti might name their upcoming mid-size SUV Maruti Suzuki Vitara.
