Honda Scoopy patented in India; launch likely

The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Honda has recently indulged in a patenting spree in India and it seems like the automaker is about to launch a host of new vehicles in the country.

Last month we brought to you the news that Honda has patented its entry-level adventure bike CRF190L in India along with NT1100 and CBR 150R. While this month, sources have brought light to the Japanese automaker’s patents for a new scooter called Scoopy in India. The company filed the patents for this new scooter in the month of March of last year and it was also spotted testing in 2017, however, the model did not make its debut in the country.

From a design standpoint, the Scoopy does not look like any other scooter in the country and sports a retro styling. The scooter is differentiated by an oval-shaped headlight cluster that sits on the centre of the front apron and is accompanied by bean-shaped turn indicators. The body of Scoopy also features some sweeping lines on smooth body panels, similar to what you’d find on other European scooters. It comes with a single-piece saddle that appears to be roomy and cushioned and should be comfortable for lengthy commutes.

In terms of features, the Scoopy will come equipped with a semi-digital instrument cluster, keyless ignition, a projector LED headlamp, a front multi-function hook, and a side stand indicator. The scooter also gets a large 15.4-litre under-seat storage in addition to a USB charging port inside the front glove box.

The new Scoopy will also come with smart keys that include an answer-back feature and an anti-theft alarm for further safety and protection. Its hardware is supported by an eSAF frame with telescopic forks upfront and a mono-shock at the back. It rides on 12-inch alloy wheels on both ends, with a disc brake in front and a drum brake in the back, all of which are supported by CBS.

The same 109.51cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, SOHC engine that powers the Activa and Dio in India will be powering the Scoopy. In India-spec models, this motor produces 7.76 PS and 9 Nm of peak torque, however in the Indonesian-spec’d versions, it produces 9 PS and 9.3 Nm. Internationally the scooter also comes with eSP (enhanced Smart Power), which not only enhances performance but also reduces fuel consumption.

Once launched the scooter will be competing with the likes of the Hero Pleasure Plus, Maestro Edge and TVS Jupiter along with its siblings Honda Dio and Activa 6G.
