Next-gen Toyota Innova MPV Could Be Based On DNGA Platform

Toyota has started testing the next-gen Innova MPV in Thailand as well as in India. The new Innova, codenamed B560 will likely to make global debut later this year. The next-gen Toyota Innova is expected to be launched in our market in 2023.
If reports are to be believed, the next-gen Toyota Innova MPV could be based on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform. This platform currently underpins the Toyota Raize, Daihatsu Rocky and the new-gen Avanza MPV.
The previous generation Toyota Avanza was based on the RWD IMV platform, which also underpins the current-gen Innova Crysta, Hilux and the Fortuner. The company could also use Toyota’s front-wheel-drive DNGA modular platform to construct the new Innova. The Avanza measures 4,475mm, which is around 260mm shorter than the Innova; however, both models have same 2,750mm wheelbase. In fact, the FWD platform allows Avanza to offer Innova-like cabin space.
The next-gen Toyota Innova could be slightly shorter than the current model without compromising on the interior space. This will help Toyota to achieve competitive pricing in the price sensitive Indian market.
The recent testing shows that the new MPV could be a different version of the Avanza for the Indian market. The front door and the ORVM’s shape and positioning appear similar to the Avanza; however, the rear door looks longer and has small quarter glass window.
The D-pillar design is also changes, as it is more upright and less raked. This would help Toyota to create more headroom for the third-row occupants. The fuel filler cap in the spied model is square, while the Avanza has round filler cap.
Toyota has already confirmed that the new Innova will debut hybrid powertrain. This will help the new model to meet the tightening global emission standards. The outgoing Innova is offered with two engine options – a 148bhp, 2.4L turbo-diesel and a 164bhp, 2.7L NA petrol. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
