Maruti Suzuki Plans Strong Hybrid, CNG, Flex-Fuel, Electric Cars

Maruti Suzuki aims to foray into the electric vehicle (EV) space by 2025. Prior to that, the Indo-Japanese automaker will focus on multiple powertrain technologies to strengthen its market in the evolving Indian automobile industry. Speaking to an online media publication, CV Raman, Chief Technology Officer, Maruti Suzuki, has revealed that the company will introduce mild hybrid vehicles, followed by strong hybrids and EVs. Maruti’s entire product lineup will be E20 fuel compliant before April 2023. In order to do so, the automaker will soon start tuning its vehicles that will result a marginal price hike. Just so you know, E20 fuel is petrol blended with 20% ethanol. The government aims to achieve 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025.

Recently, the company introduced the mild hybrid technology in the updated Ertiga and XL6 MPVs. If reports are to be believed, the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Brezza could be the brand’s first model to receive strong hybrid technology in the country. Compared to mild hybrid tech, the strong hybrid system has bigger capacity battery and electric motor with start-stop technology.

Shashank Srivastava Senior Executive Director – Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki has revealed that the localisation will help bring down cost of EVs in India. And strong hybrid technology might help achieve localisation of electric cars as both share several components. The company will also bring in CNG variants of its existing models including Baleno, Ertiga, Brezza and Ciaz. Maruti Suzuki will introduce flex-fuel technology in future. Though, it doesn’t have any plan to re-enter the diesel market.

As mentioned above, the Indo-Japanese automaker will introduce new CNG range including both Arena and Nexa models. While the Baleno CNG is ready to hit roads in coming months, the Brezza CNG might come with new-generation model in May 2022. The all-new Brezza and Swift could be offered with Suzuki’s stronger hybrid technology. The brand’s first EV is slated to arrive sometime in 2025.
