Skoda-Volkswagen start rhird shift at Chakan plant

In order to keep up with the increasing demands for vehicles from the Czech and German automakers Škoda Auto and Volkswagen respectively, the wholly-owned Indian subsidiary of German automotive manufacturing company Volkswagen Group – Škoda Auto Volkswagen India has now ramped up the production at its plant at Chakan, near Pune.
According to the automaker, the third manufacturing shift will help the brands to fulfil the rising market demand for Skoda-VW group cars in the country. Demand for models such as the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun has been strong in India, according to the company and with the commencement of the third shift, the company intends to speed up the pending Slavia deliveries while simultaneously preparing for the debut of the Volkswagen Virtus in Q2 2022.
The German automaker Volkswagen also recently commenced the export of the T-Cross in Mexico, and it further plans to export some of the other India 2.0 models in the coming months. This is another one of the reasons why the brand has started the third shift in its Chakan plant. According to the company, the demand for its vehicles is projected to expand both domestically and internationally in the following months of this year. The 540-acre Skoda Auto VW India facility in Chakan is one of the largest in the country as it has everything from the body and paint shop to the engine shop and final assembly.

The Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited recently revealed that it had a 76 percent increase in volume across its five brands in 2021, making it one of the most successful years of the brand in India. Skoda’s highest-ever quarterly sales (January-March) of 13,120 vehicles, as well as its highest-ever monthly sales (March 2022: 5,608 units) since it began operations in India, have begun the year on a bright note.
Speaking on the announcement of the impressive sales figures of the brands, Piyush Arora, Managing director of SAVWIPL said, “This is a testimony to the overwhelming response received by the cars launched under the VW Group’s India 2.0 project. With the third shift, we have taken on additional manpower to help us cater to the increase in demand that we foresee both on the domestic and export front.”
Volkswagen Group India announced in October 2019 that its three Indian subsidiaries – Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (VWIPL), Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt Ltd (NSC), and Škoda Auto India Pvt Ltd (SAIPL) – would be merged into a single entity known as Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, with its headquarters in Pune. Gurpratap Boparai was named Managing Director of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India for the first time. The SAVWIPL focuses on Volkswagen, Audi, and Škoda car manufacturing and sales in India. Porsche and Lamborghini, both part of the Volkswagen Group, also sell their automobiles in India via them.
The Volkswagen Group is currently preparing for June 9th which will mark the launch of the Volkswagen Virtus sedan in the country. The Chakan facility has already commenced a series production of the Vento successor, and deliveries of the Honda City competitor are slated to begin in mid-June.
