Maruti Suzuki’s safest car is their compact SUV, Vitara Brezza. It scored 4 stars in the crash test done by Global NCAP. The Brezza is based on the Global C platform that was developed with Fiat. Alejandro Furas, the GNCAP secretary general said in an interview with Autocar India, “The car (Brezza/Urban Cruiser) is not far away from a 5 star, there’s not much they need to do to achieved this.”

Usually, manufacturers start finding ways to reduce the production cost as the vehicle gets old. However, it seems like that has not been the case with the Vitara Brezza or the Urban Cruiser. The Brezza was tested back in 2018 and it scored a 4-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 2-star rating for child occupant protection. Recently, Global NCAP tested the Toyota Urban Cruiser which is basically a rebadged version of the Maruti Brezza. Surprisingly, the safety rating went up. Urban Cruiser also scored 4 stars for adult occupant protection but the child occupant protection went up to 3 stars. This happened because a rear-facing child seat was used this time.

Global NCAP wanted to know if the manufacturer has started to cut any corners which would have then decreased the safety rating but that is not the case. Furas said We wanted to know if there were any changes implemented in the car since our first test [of the Brezza] and we’re gladly surprised to see the car is the same as we tested with the Brezza.” He did say that he hoped that Maruti would have added a  centre, three-point seat belt added by now.

Maruti Suzuki could achieve a 5-star rating in the crash test with the upcoming Brezza Facelift. They could redesign and do the needful technical changes that are required to achieve a 5-star rating. We have already seen them improving in terms of safety. For instance, the Baleno now gets 6 airbags on the higher-end variants. The recently launched Ertiga also now gets four airbags on the higher variants. Moreover, they are also offering features like Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control and Hill Hold Assist.

Global NCAP will be using more strict protocols starting from July. They would be testing the vehicles for side impacts and the vehicles are also required to have Electronic Stability Control. We already know that the 2022 Brezza will come with Electronic Stability Control and it would also get 6 airbags.

Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the new generation of Brezza in June this year. It would no longer carry the “Vitara” moniker, it would simply be called Maruti Suzuki Brezza. The Vitara nameplate is expected to be used for a future SUV.

The Brezza Facelift would come with a new 1.5-litre DualJet VVT petrol engine that we have already seen on the 2022 Ertiga. It would come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
