Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have developed two new mid-size SUVs. Both the manufacturers will have their own version of the SUV. We do know that Toyota is going to release their mid-size SUV on July 1st and they might call it Hyryder. Maruti’s version is expected to release around the festive season. Now, the details of the engine and the gearbox have been leaked online.

Both the SUVs will be offered with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that will be mated to some kind of hybrid technology. The lower variants will get a mild-hybrid technology while the higher variants will get a strong hybrid system.

The mild-hybrid system will come with the K12C engine that we have seen on the XL6 and the Ertiga that were launched a few months back. It will produce 103 Ps of max power so the torque output should be around 137 Nm. It will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Till now, we have only seen a 5-speed manual gearbox with this 1.5-litre K-Series engine. The report also says that the mild hybrid engine will also offer all-wheel drive system. So, the upcoming SUVs will be the first in the segment to get all-wheel drive option.

Then we come to the strong hybrid engine that will get two strong electric motors to drive the front wheels only. It will produce 116 Ps of max power and the torque output is not known as of now. This engine will come mated to only an e-CVT gearbox. The power figures are very similar to the one that we have seen on international-spec Vitara Hybrid but it does come with a 6-speed AMT. So, yes the e-CVT that we will get in our country will be smoother.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will not offer any diesel engines. However, we can expect the fuel efficiency figures to be on the higher side just like other Maruti Suzuki vehicles. Moreover, the fuel efficiency figures of the strong hybrid should be impressive.

Toyota has codenamed their mid-size SUV D22 whereas Maruti Suzuki is calling their version YFG. Both the SUVs will share a lot of components and features. However, from the spy shots, we do know that both SUVs will have their own unique design elements.

From the spy shots, we know that both the SUVs will get a split headlamp design where the LED Daytime Running Lamp and the turn indicator will be placed above and the main headlamp unit will sit in the bumper. The headlamps will also get a projector setup.

Maruti Suzuki YFG gets squared-off wheel arches and a simple, smooth design instead of cuts and creases. The SUV was running on five-spoke alloy wheels that we have seen on international spec Vitara. It is expected that the manufacturer will change the alloy wheels when they launch the production-spec SUV.
