MG Motor is planning to expand its electric vehicle (EV) product portfolio in the Indian market. The company recently introduced the updated MG ZS EV with improved design, more features and longer range. We have reported earlier that the British automaker is considering an electric car for the mass-market that will cost below Rs 10 lakh. According to a fresh media report, the MG E230 two-door EV will be the brand’s second electric model in the country. It’s said to hit showrooms in early 2023.
The MG E230 electric car will underpin SAIC-GM-Wuling’s GSEV (Global Small Electric Vehicle) platform that’s known for its compact size and ease of usage. It supports several smart features including ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), Internet of vehicle (IOV), automatic parking, voice commands and more. Furthermore, the GSEV batteries are IP68 waterproof and boosted with Smart Battery Management system. The same architecture has been used in Baojun’s E100, E200, E300 and E300 Plus two-door models and China-spec Wuling Hongguang mini electric car.
The upcoming MG small electric car will be customised to meet Indian regulations and market requirements. Here, it could be offered with a 20kWh battery pack delivering a range close to 150km on a single charge. The E230 might also come with the more powerful 54bhp electric motor than its Chinese sibling – Hongguang mini EV. The latter is available with the 9.3kWh and 13.9kWh battery pack options along with a rear mounted 27bhp e-motor.
Official details of the MG E230 electric car are yet to be revealed. Though, the model is reported to be equipped with safety features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. MG Motor India has already confirmed that its new electric car will cost under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). Besides the E230, the company is considering an electric hatchback for the Indian market.
