The speculations of Maruti Suzuki planning a five-door version of the popular four-wheel-drive off-roader SUV Jimny have been doing the rounds for quite some time. While Maruti Suzuki is yet to confirm the launch of Jimny in India officially, it looks like it is working secretly in a full swing in the right direction. A few pictures of the five-door version of the Suzuki Jimny undergoing trial runs in Europe have surfaced on Carscoops, indicating that Suzuki is indeed planning the SUV for the Indian car market.

The heavily camouflaged test mules of the five-door version of the Suzuki Jimny look seemingly longer than the global three-door version of the SUV. As expected, the five-door Suzuki Jimny has a stretched length and longer wheelbase to accommodate the additional two doors for the second row. In addition, it also gets extra windows to complement the added doors, which are square-shaped and go well with the overall upright and boxy design of the Jimny.

While the entire body is covered by camouflage, it is evident that the five-door Suzuki Jimny retains the front and rear profiles of the three-door version. It means that the five-door Jimny will also benefit from elements like rounded housings for projector headlamps, a front grille with vertical slats, 16-inch alloy wheels and a mount for the spare wheel on the tailgate.

Even the cabin of the test mules of the five-door Suzuki Jimny is visible in one of the spy shots that surfaced, which shows that this new version of the Jimny will remain unchanged from the inside. This new five-door Jimny will continue to come with a three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel and an old-school instrument console with dedicated housings. It will also get a touchscreen infotainment system, controls for the air conditioner in the centre console and rounded AC vents. The model in the pictures has an automatic transmission lever as well.

Suzuki Jimny to arrive in India soon

For the Indian market, Suzuki might launch this five-door version of the Jimny to make it more practical and usable, keeping family-oriented Indian buyers in mind. This version will fall within the sub-four-meter bracket with an overall length lesser than four meters and a wheelbase of around 2,500mm. The added length and wheelbase will liberate more space for the second row of passengers and the boot compartment.

If launched in India, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny will share its 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated K15C Dualjet engine, which has made its way in the updated Ertiga and XL6 and the all-new Brezza. Assisted with a mild-hybrid system, this engine produces 103 PS of maximum power and 136.8 Nm of maximum torque. While a 5-speed manual gearbox will be offered as the standard transmission, an optional 6-speed torque converter will also be introduced as an option. In all likelihood, the India-spec Suzuki Jimny will have its most previous trait offered as standard – Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel-drive system.
