Toyota Hyryder SUV may rival Hyundai Creta in India

Toyota Kirloskar Motor is planning to introduce a new model in India in the coming months. Toyota’s upcoming compact SUV has been code-named D22. It will reportedly be called as Toyota Hyryder and will make its debut in June. The launch will likely take place before this year’s festive season.

The upcoming SUV will be designed and developed under Toyota and Suzuki partnership. And it will be the first product of the company to be co-developed with Suzuki.

Though the carmaker has not confirmed the name of the upcoming SUV yet. Reports have suggested that it will be called the Toyota Hyryder.

As per the company, it has been designed for the specific markets. It will come with the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine borrowed from the global-spec Yaris Cross Hybrid. It will be paired to a battery pack and a 59kWh electric motor. The motor will produce a combined power output of around 114bhp. While the petrol unit will deliver torque around 120Nm, the electric motor will return 141Nm. On Toyota Yaris Cross, the hybrid powertrain delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of over 26kmpl.

Having both the motors will enable it to run both the hybrid and pure EV modes.

The new Toyota SUV will also be made available with the 1.5L petrol engine. It will be offered in both manual and automatic gearboxes options. The Toyota Hyryder SUV will underpin the heavily localized version of the brand’s TNGA platform.

The rumoured Toyota Hyryder will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi plant near Bengaluru.

The new mid-size SUV will be packed with lots of advanced features including connected car tech, a 360 degree camera, Head-Up Display (HUD), wireless smartphone charging, a sunroof, wireless charging, a digital instrument cluster and more. It is also rumoured to be offered with ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) suite.

Though it is being co-developed with Suzuki and both models will share platform and design elements, the new Toyota Hyryder SUV will have a different look from Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming mid-size SUV. However, the powertrain setup will remain the same. It will likely rival against the likes of Hyundai Creta.
