Bigger battery

The homegrown manufacturer will be upgrading the battery pack from 30.2 kWh to 40 kWh. The new battery pack will be 30 percent larger than the current battery pack. The ARAI claimed range is expected to increase from 312 km to 400 km. The real-world range could increase from 200 km to 300 km.

Boot space reduced

The battery pack will be larger and will also be stored in the boot space. Because of this, the boot space will be decreased which means that Tata might have to take out the spare wheel and will offer a tyre puncture repair kit. It might happen that the boot space is kept vertically just as they did with the Tigor EV. For reference, the Nexon EV has a boot space of 350 litres.

More weight

We all know that batteries are very heavy. The petrol Nexon weighs 1.2 tonnes, the diesel engine weighs 1.3 tonnes and Nexon EV adds another 100 kgs so it weighs 1.4 tonnes which is quite heavy for a compact SUV. The additional batteries would weigh 100 kgs more because of which the long-range Nexon EV is expected to weigh just under 1.5 tonnes.

More features

Tata Motors would offer more features with the long-range Nexon EV. It would come with Electronic Stability Program and rear disc brakes. Both these features would help in adding to the safety quotient of the SUV. There would also be adjustable regeneration which would help in improving the driving range. Other changes that could make their way to the long-range Nexon EV are ventilated seats, Park Mode, Cruise control etc. Cosmetically, the long-range Nexon EV is expected to stay the same. Tata Motors might change the alloy wheel design and give some badging to the long-range Nexon EV. The rest of the compact SUV will stay the same as the regular Nexon EV.

Current Nexon EV to stay on sale

Once, the 40 kWh Nexon EV launches, Tata Motors will not discontinue the current Nexon EV with 30.2 kWh. So, both the variants will stay on sale side by side. People who will be mostly using the Nexon EV for daily commutes and city chores can opt for the regular 30.2 kWh version whereas people who also want to do long journeys can go for the long-range 40 kWh version.

Price

With all these upgrades, the price of the long-range Nexon will be more than the regular Nexon EV. The 40 kWh Nexon EV is expected to start from somewhere around Rs. 17 or 18 lakhs whereas the regular Nexon EV starts at Rs. 14.24 lakhs and the top-end variant costs Rs. 16.85 lakhs. Both the prices are ex-showroom.

Rivals

Because of the additional driving range, the long-range Nexon EV will be going against the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. However, the Nexon EV will cost less than them because the ZS EV and Kona Electric come to India through the CKD route.
