Toyota-Maruti SUV (Creta Rival) – New Details Emerge

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota JV is working on a wide range of new models for India as well as global markets. The first jointly developed model will be launched in the next few months. The joint venture will launch the new compact SUV, codenamed Toyota D22 by Diwali 2022.
Toyota will also supply this SUV to Maruti Suzuki, which will be re-badged for the domestic market. Codenamed YFG, the new compact SUV will also be launched in the country by the end of 2022. The new SUV will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq.
Production At Toyota’s Bidadi Plant
The new Maruti-Toyota SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based Plant 2. This is claimed to be the same production unit, which was used to produce the discontinued Yaris mid-sized sedan.
Launch Details
Testing of the new Toyota-Suzuki SUV has already been commenced. The vehicles have been spotted multiple times around Maruti Suzuki’s production plant in Gurugram Haryana. Recent media reports claim that the company could showcase the new SUV by mid-2022, around June-July. The new Toyota D22 SUV is reportedly to be launched during festive season, around Diwali. However, the company is yet to make an official announcement on the same.
Toyota’s Global Platform
The new Toyota compact SUV is reportedly to be based on the heavily localised TNGA-B or DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture). This platform currently underpins multiple SUVs in global markets. The platform is compatible with different body styles as well as multiple powertrain options including petrol, mild and strong hybrid.
Hybrid Powertrain (Toyota’s Sourced)
Suzuki and Toyota JV is focusing on bring strong hybrid powertrains before pure EVs in the market. The new SUV is likely to be offered with two petrol engines – one with a mild hybrid system and another with a stronger hybrid system. The regular model is likely to get Suzuki’s 1.5L Dualjet K15C petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid system. The stronger hybrid unit will come with a bigger battery pack and electric motors. This model could run only in EV mode, which should improve the fuel efficiency as well as performance.
Toyota is also testing the Yaris Cross in India. This could be used to test the hybrid powertrain components for the upcoming compact SUV. The Yaris Hybrid powertrain comprises of a 1.5L 3-cylinder petrol engine working together with an electric motor. The company claims that the combustion engine has a thermal efficiency of up to 40 percent and can power the SUV in FWD mode. The AWD system is also available on demand to tackle different terrains like rain, sand and snow.
The spy images reveal that the new Toyota D22 SUV could share styling cues from global Toyota SUVs including the Corolla Cross, the RAV4 and the Yaris Cross. It has split headlamp setup with dual LED daytime running lamps and the signature Toyota grille. Similar to the new Camry, the SUV could have a chrome strip running across the width. The SUV’s front bumper has a large honeycomb mesh patterned air-dam. It rides on chunky squared-off wheel arches.
The cabin of the SUV will have similarities with the new Corolla Cross. It is likely to get a free-standing touchscreen infotainment unit in the centre of the layered dashboard. Similar to the Corolla Cross, the horizontal AC vents are positioned below the touch with hazard light switch placed between the vents. The vehicle is likely to get wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, automatic AC, automatic headlamps & wipers, electrically adjustable driver’s seat and ORVMs. The company could also offer ADAS features.
