Tata Altroz EV spotted on Indian roads

Tata Motors is currently leading the EV segment of the Indian market with their Nexon EV and Tigor EV. Recently, a test mule of the Altroz was spotted that was fully camouflaged. With the Altroz DCA now being launched, it is not clear what Tata is testing with the test mule is of the Altroz. There are chances that it could be of the Altroz EV.

The electric hatchback was spotted on NH48. It is expected to come with the same Ziptron technology that Tata Motors is using on the Tigor EV and Nexon EV. Tata is expected to price the electric hatchback competitively in the Indian market. In the previous media reports, it was expected that the Altroz EV will have a claimed driving range of 500 km. This is possible because of the additional battery pack and ALFA architecture on which the premium hatchback is based on.

However, considering that SUVs are the new trend, Tata Motors might bring in the Punch EV first. The homegrown manufacturer will be unveiling a new electric vehicle on the 29th of April. It is not yet known what Tata Motors is planning.

Tata Motors working on long-range Nexon EV

Tata Motors is currently working on a long-range version of the Nexon EV. The current Nexon EV will be sold alongside the long-range Nexon EV. So, people who are buying an electric vehicle for most daily commutes will get the regular current Nexon EV whereas people who want to use the vehicle for long journeys can get the long-range model. Cosmetically, it won’t be much different from the current Nexon EV. However, there would be mechanical upgrades.

The current Nexon EV comes with a 30.2 kWh battery whereas the long-range Nexon EV will come with a 40 kWh battery pack. The claimed driving range of the Nexon EV is 312 km, it is expected to get bumped up to 400 km with the long-range Nexon EV. The real-life driving range of the Nexon EV is around 200 to 250 km. This will increase to 300 km which will help people in doing long tours.

Because of the additional battery pack, the cost of the long-range Nexon EV is expected to be around Rs. 17 lakhs to Rs. 18 lakhs. The current Nexon EV starts at Rs. 14.54 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 17.15 lakhs ex-showroom.

The additional battery pack is expected to be stored in the boot space which means that the boot space will reduce. The Nexon EV has a boot space of 350 litres. Tata would also have to modify the floor plan according to the new requirement.

Tata Motors would also add more features to the long-range Nexon EV to justify the higher price. It would come with adjustable regeneration, ventilated seats, cruise control, Electronic Stability Program and rear disc brakes.

We do not know whether the long-range Nexon EV will be more powerful or not.  The current Nexon EV produces 129 PS of max power and 245 Nm of peak torque. Tata does offer an 8-year warranty on the battery pack and it is also IP67 water and dust resistant.
