CHENNAI: AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam on Saturday urged chief minister M K Stalin to intervene and hold talks with Japanese auto major Nissan to continue its operations in Tamil Nadu.
Nissan had recently announced that production of Datsun redi-GO ceased at the Chennai plant and the sale would continue until the stock lasted.
In a statement, Panneerselvam said that even as the policy note of the government claimed that the relentless hardwork of the government had resulted in state attracting a large number of investments, providing employment opportunities to lakhs of Tamil youths and paving the way for strengthening the economy of the state, the state was facing a worsening situation with companies closing down manufacturing units one after another.
“The future of thousands of employees will be uncertain if the Nissan plant is shut down. There is also a huge chance of the government losing revenue from the plant. Only revenues from the sale of spare parts will be available. The fact that two auto majors have stopped their production in Tamil Nadu in one year is not only painful but also affects the economy of Tamil Nadu,” the former CM said.

He recalled his earlier request to the chief minister to hold talks with Ford India when it announced winding up its operations in Maraimalai Nagar plant last year. The plant was on the verge of closure due to lack of action from the government, he charged.
