Automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has discontinued some variants of its entry-level hatchbacks that were sold in India. The cars that have been discontinued in India are single-airbag variants of the Alto and S-Presso. Keeping in mind the safety standard on the cars the manufacturer has taken this decision.
The official website of Maruti Suzuki reveals that the variants of Alto that were discontinued were STD, STD (O) and LXi. On the other hand, the S-Presso trims that were discontinued were STD and LXi. This means that Maruti Suzuki Alto offers LXi (O) as the new base variant now. Similarly, when it comes to the lineup of Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, the news base variant is STD (O). Now, all the variants of Alto and S-Presso will have at least 2 airbags in them.
As the base trims of the two hatchbacks were discontinued, the new base prices for the initial trims of Alto and S-Presso have also gone up. The ex-showroom, Delhi price of Maruti Suzuki Alto is Rs 4,08,000. On the other hand, the ex-showroom, Delhi price of Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is Rs 3,99,500. The prices for Maruti Alto and Maruti S-Presso go up to Rs 5,03,000 and Rs 5,64,000 respectively. Apart from being available in Petrol variants, both the cars are available in CNG too.
Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari has confirmed that every car sold after October 1, 2022, in India will have mandatory six airbags. This comes as a major safety factor in the auto industry in the country. However, many car manufacturers were unhappy about it and Maruti Suzuki is no different.
The Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), RC Bhargava spoke in an interview about the sales of its cars. RC Bhargava revealed that the sales of the cars are yet to achieve the figures of 2018-19. The automotive industry is currently facing chip shortages and the addition of extra airbags will mean that recovery of the auto industry will take longer, he added. An approximate hike of Rs 20,000 is expected if six airbags are installed in small cars.
