Anand Mahindra had promised Idli Amma a new house after her story caught his attention last year

Anand Mahindra gifted a new house to 86-year-old Idli Amma, aka K Kamalathal.
Idli Amma’s story went viral in 2019 when it was discovered that she had been selling homemade Idli for over three decades for just one Rupee.
Anand Mahindra said at the time that he’d ‘invest’ in her business and eventually promised her a new house-cum-kitchen in 2021.

Anand Mahindra gifted a new house to Tamil Nadu’s Idli Amma on Mother’s Day and fulfilled the promise he had made to her. His altruism has once again proved that the Mahindra Group Chairman is a man of the people first.

The entrepreneur and billionaire shared a video on Sunday that shows K Kamalathal, affectionately known as Idli Amma, inaugurating her new house complete with a ‘special kitchen’ designed specifically for her.

Anand Mahindra wrote, “Immense gratitude to our team for completing the construction of the house in time to gift it to Idli Amma on #MothersDay She’s the embodiment of a Mother’s virtues: nurturing, caring & selfless. A privilege to be able to support her & her work. Happy Mother’s Day to you all!”

K Kamalathal, from Vadivelampalayam village in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district has been selling homemade Idli and Sambar for at least 37 years for just Re.1. Idli Amma’s story went viral in 2019 and caught Anand Mahindra’s attention.

He took notice of the generosity of her spirit and selflessness and decided to help her out.

“I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her I’d be happy to ‘invest’ in her business & buy her an LPG fueled stove,” he said at the time.

Later, in April 2021, the businessman went one better and promised that she will have her own house.
