Akasa Air Breaks The Norm With Crew Uniform

One of the most hotly-awaited airlines in India, Akasa Air, often gives timely updates about its progress. Whether it’s the first sighting of its plane or other key announcements, the carrier often teases with witty social media posts. Continuing that trend, the airline today first teased with a video of its flight crew and later revealed the complete look of its pilots and cabin crew.

Akasa Air started the day by dropping a new video on its Twitter account, giving us a glimpse of its ‘crew look.’ The 20-second black-and-white clip shows the airline’s cockpit and cabin crew suiting up in preparation for a flight, with the caption reading, “Can’t keep calm. Stay tuned!”

Several people responded positively to the post, which also caught the attention of the CEO of another soon-to-be-launched airline, Jet Airways. Sanjiv Kapoor replied,

“A black and white pre-launch teaser. Now where have I seen that before? … Reminds me of the casual jeans and kurtis weekend uniform we had introduced at SpiceJet in 2014 … Casual and fun works well for LCC. Good an Indian LCC will have it now.”

Cabin crew to wear sneakers

Just hours after the teaser, Akasa unveiled the complete first look of its airline crew uniform, featuring a contemporary look with bright orange colors of the airline. What immediately jumped out at us was the cabin crew members wearing black-white-and-orange sneakers – a first for any Indian airline.

Describing the inspiration behind the uniform, Belson Coutinho, Co-Founder, and Chief Marketing & Experience Officer, Akasa Air, said,

“Employee centricity and sustainability are going to be at the core of everything that we do at Akasa Air. We have designed a uniform in which our team feels both proud and comfortable as they direct their energy to ensure a warm, friendly, and efficient flying experience for all our passengers”.

Deepika Mehra, Founder of the shoe company Vanilla Moon, added that they are “delighted to share this shoe design – which is sustainably produced, functional, comfortable, gender-neutral and contemporary. The design also reflects Akasa Air’s employee-centric culture to ensure their comfort.”

Akasa’s social media team has been fairly active in the run-up to the launch, giving us timely updates to keep aviation enthusiasts and future flyers informed. On May 17th, the carrier revealed its airline code – QP – resulting in a light-hearted exchange with Jet Airways, claiming to “gatecrash” the party together and being eager to “Jet together” on this new adventure. This was done shortly after Jet had successfully managed to get its AOC after a series of proving flights.

Soon after that, the airline shared with us the first look of its aircraft wearing bright “Sunrise Orange” and “Passionate Purple” colors. The Boeing 737 MAX was in the final stages before delivery then.

Back then, Akasa was in the news for the delay of its first plane, and the timing of the photographs was significant, given how the delay made many anxious and apprehensive about the airline’s launch.

The airline had also announced its reservation system provider earlier in May, giving the responsibility to Minneapolis-based Navitaire – an Amadeus company that provides technology and business solutions to the airline industry.

What next?

The two things that are probably keeping Akasa’s team busy are the proving flights to obtain the AOC and the ticket sales before the launch.

Any day now, Akasa will start with the process of conducting proving flights, which is a necessary step for an airline to obtain the AOC from India’s aviation regulator, the DGCA. Akasa also announced that it would start ticket sales in early July ahead of its official launch later in the month.
